FAQs - Advanced-Glass

Why should I consider resurfacing my pool with Advanced-Glass?

Advanced-Glass is the most durable, long-lasting, and comfortable pool finish available. The difference is in the finished product. A worry-free, smooth, "orange-peel" finish that will last for years to come!

What about chemicals?

A fiberglass surface does not alter water’s chemical balance so substantially fewer chemicals are used. Plaster, on the other hand,  reacts with water to raise pH levels.  Gunite/plaster pools use substantially more acid and chlorine to counterbalance this chemical reaction.

What about algae?

Algae grows and is harbored in the pores of the plaster.  Acid baths and scrubbing are required to remove algae in a plaster pool.  With fiberglass algae sweeps right off the surface and black algae is never a problem again because the roots cannot penetrate the fiberglass shell.

I received a better price than yours –  why?  Isn't all fiberglass the same?

The Advanced-Glass system by Advanced Pool Coatings is the ONLY fiberglass resurfacing system in Northern California that has undergone the rigorous review by the LA County Environmental Health Department. This means that our system is approved for use in swimming pool applications. Protect the health and safety of your family and pool users - only use approved systems.  In addition, not all applicators are equal - determine the experience level of the different companies. How long have they been in business?  Are they a "real" company that has the wherewithal to stand behind their warranty?  Determine the type of surface preparation and materials used to protect your family and your investment.

Do you use sub contractors?

No.  We perform all of our own work.

Are the fumes toxic?

No, the odor that is emitted is styrene, which may be somewhat offensive to some sensitive people but is not harmful to their health.  We meet all California VOC laws.

Is fiberglass only for cracked pools?

Advanced-Glass fiberglass is the BEST option for cracked and structurally distressed pools.  But, keep in mind that ANY pool can be resurfaced with Advanced-Glass - gunite/plaster, pebble-tec/aggregate, vinyl liner pools, drop-in fiberglass pools, concrete pools - you name it!  Refer to the comparison chart, to see additional features and benefits of Advanced-Glass.

How is the fiberglass terminated?

We cut a niche around all openings and under the tile and tuck the fiberglass in at that point.  This whole configuration is then harmonized with our topcoat and provides uniformity of color and appearance.

What is the difference in price between plaster and fiberglass?

Prices for plaster will vary depending on the product and quality of work.  It is not so much the cost but the durability and the warranty that is offered that sets the products apart.

What about colors?

We recommend white.  We do offer a limited color selection, however we do not guarantee color fastness and uniformity.  All colors, whether  plaster or fiberglass, will fade and mottle over time.

How long will it last?

Up to 25 years or more.

After application do I have to brush the pool for days like with plaster?  When do I fill the pool?

No brushing required, simply let cure for 24 hours and fill!

How long does it take to resurface my pool?

1-3 days depending on the pool size and condition of the substrate.

How does it bond?

Our exclusive primer coat bonds fiberglass to plaster yet still allows it to retain its flexible properties.

Do you sandblast?

No, our system works best over a smooth finish that has been properly prepared by our experienced applicators.
